FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
My fondness for Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is well documented. So when I saw my idol @kenjilopezalt singing the praises of their new Pickle menu, I knew I had to tap in. My affection for all things pickled (cucumbers, onions, asparagus, carrots, radish, etc) is strong as well, so this is right up my alley.
I ordered a six piece pickle wings, along with a side of fried pickles and a chilled pickle lemonade. The pickle lemonade was the first item to grace my tastebuds, and I was immediately impressed. It was presented to me with no ice, which concerned me given how sweet some of the other Popeyes beverages are. But the pickle lemonade was a perfect balance of sweet, salty, and sour. They also had a frozen option, which I would be more than willing to go back to sample.
The fried pickles were solid, more breading relative to the amount pickle than I would have liked but that’s to be expected from fast food. While they had nothing on the fried pickles from Franklin’s Hall, these belong on the menu permanently.
While it felt strange to be eating wings from Popeyes, they were delicious. Spicy and tangy and zingy, they reminded me of the KFC Wingz Zabb that I enjoyed in Thailand. I might have preferred a regular piece of Popeyes chicken with this sauce rather than wings, but they were nothing to sneeze at. There was also a pickle chicken sandwich that I only had a bite of, but tasted just like the regular chicken sandwich with a little more pickle umph.
All in all, the pickle lemonade might have been my favorite thing. Did I prefer the wings over regular Popeyes chicken (with plenty of Cajun Sparkle)? Not quite. Shout out to Popeyes for going out on a limb with this new menu, and pulling off the ambitious concept.
